Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is emitted from malfunctioning fuel-burning appliances, such as a furnace or boiler. It’s extremely toxic and can result in death. Malfunctioning natural gas or propane heating systems can emit carbon monoxide without any visible warning signs, and unless you have a properly functioning carbon monoxide detector in your home, it can go virtually undetected.
Should your oil-fired furnace or boiler malfunction, smoke or soot would be emitted from the system, giving off an odor as well as a visible warning that can help you detect the carbon monoxide before it reaches a dangerous level in your home.
Oil Storage vs. Gas Pipeline
Oil fuel is stored in a stand-alone tank on your property. It’s accessible for preventative maintenance and emergency service, and you can see when your fuel levels are running low to prevent a run-out. Natural gas, on the other hand, is brought into your home through a municipal underground pipeline. If there is ever any issue with the municipal pipeline, your service could be completely cut off until the problem is resolved, leaving you without heat or fuel for your appliances.
