Safety first

Choose Oil Heat for Your Home?

Approximately 6.2 million U.S. homes rely on heating oil for seasonal warmth, with the Northeast accounting for about 87% of the nation’s oil heat usage. Home heating oil is a safe, reliable fuel, and it’s only getting cleaner, more efficient and renewable as time goes on.
When compared to other heating fuels such as natural gas, there are fewer safety concerns with having the fuel in your home.

Oil Won’t Explode

Unlike natural gas, oil is a non-explosive fuel. In fact, oil won’t even burn unless it’s been preheated to 140 degrees, so there is very little chance that it would ever ignite. Rest easier knowing that your family will be safe with oil heat in your home.

Oil Emits Detectable Warning Signs for Carbon Monoxide Leaks

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is emitted from malfunctioning fuel-burning appliances, such as a furnace or boiler. It’s extremely toxic and can result in death. Malfunctioning natural gas or propane heating systems can emit carbon monoxide without any visible warning signs, and unless you have a properly functioning carbon monoxide detector in your home, it can go virtually undetected.
Should your oil-fired furnace or boiler malfunction, smoke or soot would be emitted from the system, giving off an odor as well as a visible warning that can help you detect the carbon monoxide before it reaches a dangerous level in your home.

Oil Storage vs. Gas Pipeline

Oil fuel is stored in a stand-alone tank on your property. It’s accessible for preventative maintenance and emergency service, and you can see when your fuel levels are running low to prevent a run-out. Natural gas, on the other hand, is brought into your home through a municipal underground pipeline. If there is ever any issue with the municipal pipeline, your service could be completely cut off until the problem is resolved, leaving you without heat or fuel for your appliances.

Oil Is an Environmentally-Friendly Fuel

Oil heat has come a long way throughout the years. Today’s oil heat produces near-zero levels of emissions, and the latest oil heating equipment is much more efficient, providing a cleaner burn and using less fuel to heat homes and businesses. In addition, the use of Bioheat®—a cleaner, greener home heating oil and biodiesel blend—is becoming more prevalent throughout the United States.
