What a Heat Pump Actually Does

A heat pump doesn’t generate heat the way a furnace or boiler does. Instead, it moves heat from one place to another. In winter, it extracts heat from the outdoor air (yes, even cold air contains heat energy) and moves it inside. Cold Climate Performance: The Real Story

The biggest skepticism about heat pumps in New England is performance in very cold weather. Older heat pump technology did struggle once temperatures dropped below about 30 degrees, which made them a questionable choice for heating-only applications in Rhode Island winters. Modern cold-climate heat pumps (ccASHP units from manufacturers like Mitsubishi, Daikin, and Bosch) are a completely different story. Many are rated to maintain full heating capacity down to 5 degrees Fahrenheit, which covers the vast majority of Rhode Island’s winter days without issue.

That said, for very old homes with limited insulation or for homeowners who want a full backup heating source, pairing a heat pump with an existing oil system as a dual-fuel setup is a common and practical approach. The heat pump handles most of the heating load at high efficiency, and the oil system kicks in only during the coldest stretches.

The Efficiency Advantage

Heat pumps are measured in “coefficient of performance” (COP) rather than efficiency percentages. A COP of 3 means the system produces 3 units of heat energy for every 1 unit of electricity it consumes. That’s 300 percent efficiency by the old measure, which no combustion system can match. At moderate temperatures, modern heat pumps often achieve COP values of 3 to 4. Even at their less efficient end during very cold weather, they typically outperform electric resistance heating.
