Atomizing
In order for combustion to occur efficiently, oil must be finely diffused in the air. If it were simply to dribble into the combustion chamber one drop at a time, it would be very difficult for your furnace to heat your home. Thus the fuel nozzle’s first job is to break up the oil into a stream of very fine mist. This acts to maximize the amount of heat your furnace is able to generate from a given volume of fuel.
Metering
It is not simply enough that your fuel nozzle breaks up the heating oil, however. It must also be carefully gauged to allow only the necessary amount of oil into the combustion chamber. Metering the flow rate of the oil is thus the second job of the fuel nozzle.
Angling
Now you understand that your fuel nozzle controls both the amount of fuel entering your furnace at any given time, as well as the airborne state of said fuel. Yet the fuel nozzle also acts to introduce the fuel at a very specific angle. This angle must be carefully tailored to the particular burner installed. In this way, the fuel nozzle acts to promote the most thorough combustion possible.
